Article: Our Merman Anchor Design
Our Merman Anchor Design
The Background
Throughout history, mermen have appeared in various forms of art, literature, and popular culture. Whether as symbols of the untamed forces of the sea or as romantic figures who capture the hearts of sailors, mermen remain a fascinating and enduring aspect of our cultural heritage, representing the mysteries and wonders of the sea.
The fouled anchor's enduring presence in maritime iconography underscores its significance in representing strength, security, and resilience on the high seas.
The Design
I wanted to bring together the fouled anchor and merman concept into a piece of jewellery that could be given as a gift to symbolise luck, stability and security in a more contemporary design to fit into our merman range.
The design started out by 3D scanning our model friend Luke Grimley, who created a variety of poses for us in our 96 camera photogrammetry rig. The rig captures data from all angles and produces a highly accurate 3D model from the resulting scan that I could use as a starting point for the design.
Once processed, it took many drafts to get to the version I was happy with. The tail was particularly challenging, taking many attempts to find the right balance both visually and physically, so the piece would hang at the perfect angle.
